Let It Snow Note Cards

We live near this wonderful landmark – The St Johns Bridge. It is a feat of wonder and physical poetry. It stands 400 feet in the air. And the grace of the towers is just a marvel. It makes living next to it a pure joy. I absolutely love being so close. Under this amazing and beautiful piece of art deco construction is a just as amazing park. It is almost the center of our community. There are concerts in the park and festivals. There are weddings and yoga classes all the time. And that is just the summer. Now winters on the Pacific Northwest between the coastal range and the Cascades are kind of a crap-shoot. It is guaranteed to rain and often. The skies are grey and full most of the time. And the puddles are extraordinary. You can forget to look up for months on end. But sometimes if the weather plays its cards right, it snows. This particularly magical day came just after Christmas and the snow had teased us for days. Snow, then immediately melt. Repeat and repeat. Exciting times, with nothing to show for it. Then the big flakes started floating down. Then bigger flakes. This particular snowstorm brought snowmen to every street and sleds to every hill. It was truly magical. I did not say tranquil, just magical. Since snow is so infrequent, no one is prepared. And the city comes to a complete standstill. For days. The streets were covered with snow. We don’t have plows. Drivers have no idea what to do and often abandon their cars as the snow gets deeper. So, getting from here to there can take hours. Stopping and looking around gets easier and easier. Even with the snow, I did keep my daily walks going. With cleats on my shoes, I had targets all over St Johns. There is a 6 foot sculpture of a smiling face and a welded fire pit with flames extending 10 feet in the air and all the impromptu sledding hills. But nothing was more serene nor more comforting than the beautiful green spires against a white background. It is small spot on the map. It is a quirky little community.
