1829 Framed Antique English Engraving: "Mail Coach"
This beautifully hand-colored engraving, titled "Mail Coach" and printed in London, England in 1829, is after a painting by British sporting artist James Pollard (1792-1867). The colors in this piece are really lovely. The coaching scene, sent on a lush wooded turnpike, features a team of four horses pulling a Royal Mail Coach filled with well-dressed occupants. In 19th century England, Royal Mail Coaches transported passengers in addition to mail. There would have been space for four passengers inside (premium fare), three outside, a driver, and a guard at the rear of the coach where mail being transported was locked in a secure trunk. This print has been custom framed with French matting in sage green and gold details.
