In all of steelhead fly fishing there are few places as fabled as the North Umpqua, and if there’s a heart of the river I think most people would agree that steamboat creek is just that. Continuously pumping life into the river year after year this tiny tributary of the North Umpqua lays refuge to thousands of summer run steelhead. Years ago this tiny piece of water was known as the dynamite hole because people unaware how fragile steelhead ecosystems are would throw sticks of dynamite into the water to blow up the fish. Now Lee Spencer stands guard year after year protecting the fish and educating anyone willing to listen.
