Out of Darkness- Lap Quilt
This vision of darkness surrounding me kept playing around in my head for months, but it wasn't just the darkness. It was the two birds that had their wings flying upward and out of the darkness, too. I wanted to choose quilt blocks with a chaotic feel and the "black on black" fabrics to further the idea that darkness can include feelings of disorder, brokenness, and confusion. I decided the top quilting would be hand quilted. The variegated purple thread looks like rain from a distance. The way the blocks are placed looks as though there is a ray of light coming down from the upper right-hand corner. The inside batting has a warm-heavy weight cotton/wool batting with batting and binding of a deep dark purple. This quilt has 425 half-square triangles and hand top quilting making it take significantly longer to construct than my typical quilts. This piece took about 25 hours to complete- truly, a masterpiece. I hope that whatever you might be going through, despite the darkness that
