"Eclipse" - Bismuth Maglev Rod - 5mm Magnet
Full of possibility, this crystal pillar is reminiscent of the solar eclipse when the white hot radiance of the sun completely encompasses the cool majesty of a weightless moon. In anticipation of the total solar eclipse coming to my native land mass on August 21, 2017, I created this little marvel where a magnet can permanently escape the oppression of our massive planet's force without leaving the atmosphere. The phenomenon responsible is called diamagnetism, and bismuth is the most diamagnetic metal on earth. The first two photos show both sides of the sculpture with slightly different openings. *Please note - The magnet will stay levitated but will not spin continuously. To keep it spinning, try placing it where there is a slight draft. This permanent levitation requires no electricity - ever. Use the words kinetic, gravity-defying, magnets, physics - the general vernacular of my beloved geekdom, and this is what you get. “How is it doing that?” “Is it plugged in?” That’s what you’l
