Mortar Pestle Lovely Patina
Mortar and pestles are always such a fun item to collect as each one seems to gesture unique personality traits lending specific form as well as various patinas. This wonderful example sports a warm and inviting maple hue seemingly held captive by gentle graining in the wood. Two incised concentric circles gracing the front add plenty of distinctive character. The footed base has a dark and rich surface that lends dimension to the pestle counterpart. Two incised circles or banding also adorn the outside area of the footed base. There are some tiny scuff marks just above the base located on the very edge of the mortar as shown in image 11. The inside boasts a dark patina as well probably due to using various herbs that were crushed using the pestle which is original to the mortar. The carved pestle exhibits fancy form as the area located in the middle has a flared ring that contours into the protruding circle and then terminates abruptly into the lower portion of the pestle.
