Ragweed Jester

The “earth” patches on this piece were sewn during the pandemic and were made for Sadie’s (Charles' daughter) suit. Since the DuVernays were quarantined at home, the artists used nearby resources for inspiration. They traced ragweeds from their yard to create leaf patches. The conversion of an invasive, allergenic weed into a shining tapestry reflects the DuVernays’ ability to keep creating during a trying time. Stripped of their festival and most of their usual inspiration, the DuVernays found beauty and energy in their everyday surroundings.
