The Mask

In this abstracted emblem, facial features are vaguely described against a hypnotic assortment of multi-colored beads. Gems glisten like eyes, while long white beads protrude downwards like teeth, constructing an ephemeral face that is as varying as its color palette.  For this tapestry, the artists laid their beaded patches on a table, and like an ouija board, moved them into place with the guidance of a spirit. This type of freeform patchwork is comparable to automatic painting, and it’s inspiring to see adopted in the context of beadwork.
