he Jonkeer Van Tets Currant (Ribes rubrum ‘Jonkheer Van Tets’) is a deciduous shrub that flowers in Spring, in Summer produces lots of red edible currants. Long stems grow from the plant base, and each branch requires pruning after ageing to a few years old. Redcurrants are self-fertile, which means you do not need to grow more than one bush in order for fruit to be produced. It’s one of the earliest varieties to ripen, bearing heavy crops of sweet-tasting fruit from early July. Bush cherries and blueberries are similar in size and appearance and combine well into a productive hedge.  Uses: Currants are closely related to the blackcurrant, but unlike many varieties of soft fruit, redcurrants grow well in northern areas and can tolerate a bit of shade. However, the more sun the plants get, the sweeter the berries. The fruit is perfect for using in summer puddings, pies and jelly, and even wine-making. Fresh currants can be used like blueberries, and somewhat like blackberries or raspber
