Montmorency Cherry Tree
The Montmorency Cherry Tree (Prunus cerasus ‘Montmorency') is a deciduous fruiting tree that is quite notably touted as, "America's most popular cherry tree". Known for producing the most popular pies and preserves. The Montmorency is a cold-hardy hybrid species that ripens early in the season. The medium-large, bright red fruit has a firm yellow flesh; clear juice; and a rich, tart flavor that bakers and jam makers love. It is a hybrid between sweet cherry x Nanking cherry, P. tomentosa. Not only does Montmorency produce the tastiest cherries, it also makes for a stunning addition to any landscape. This winter-hardy tree has a beautiful shape and produces lovely snow-white flowers in the spring. These gorgeous blooms give way to clusters of bold red cherries in early July. While ‘Montmorency’ can grow to a height of 15-20’, it may be pruned to maintain its shape and height. This tree is self-fertile, but planting two or more trees will ensure the best crop.
