The Paper Birch (Betula papyrifera) It is a medium-sized deciduous tree that thrives in well drained, sandy moist sites, noted it's beautiful white bark. This paper-like bark has traditionally been used by the North American Natives for canoe construction, hence its alternate name. It is the state tree of New Hampshire.Develops a smooth white bark that curls and peels (once mature). Provides bright yellow fall color. Features simple leaves that are 2–4" long, borne on leaf stems about 1" in length and medium green in color. Margins are double-toothed and leaves are arranged alternately. Produces brown or green catkins in April and May. Grows in an oval shape. Yields very small seeds that are smooth and oval or elliptical in shape, nestled between two wings. This tree grows at a medium to fast rate, with height increases of anywhere from 13" to more than 24" per year. Prefers full sun, in sandy loamy moist soils.
