Burlington, NJ. He was born Étienne de Grellet du Mabillier, to a counsellor of King Louis XVI. He was raised as a Catholic and was educated at the military college of Lyons, entering the body-guard of Louis XVI at the age of seventeen. Sentenced to execution during the French Revolution, Grellet escaped and fled to the United States. He was converted to the Society of Friends through the writings of William Penn and other prominent writers of that sect, and became an itinerant missionary. His travels throughout Europe and North America were astonishing in number and effect; he entered prisons
