Antique Kazak Rug - 5'4 x 7'8

This Kazak rug was handwoven in the southern Caucasus during the late 19th Century. A striking field design features a figure "8" formed by two abstracted vase devices and two "c" shaped motifs with plant like characteristics. The forms are rendered in lacquer red and encapsulated by a cartouche shape in the same tone all on an undulating blue backdrop. In each corner there is a flowering shrub and scattered rosettes on a deep navy ground. Accents of yellow, ivory and various greens add further interest. The whole is framed by a main border of scrolling rosettes on a brilliant blue field which shifts from teal to turquoise like the waters surrounding a remote tropical island. A well composed and visually arresting example of caucasian weaving with plus colors. In good condition, with signs of wear throughout (as pictured). Woven with a red weft so the wear has a warm red glow. Structurally sound and edges have been reinforced for longevity. Low silky pile with a soft, floppy handle.
