Antique Caucasian Soumak Rug - 7' x 10'8
Caucasian Soumak rug, handwoven during the first quarter of the 20th century. This stunning Soumak is composed of a bonbon pink field with three blue central medallions. The general color palette is composed of blues, pinks, browns, and creams. In each medallion is a large star with smaller stars on each side of the medallions. Filling in the space in the field are myriad rosettes; bird shapes like eagles, roosters, and abstract/composite birds; ram horns; knots and stars. The main border is a variation on the classic calyx and serrated leaf design. The minor borders are a simplified version of the crab or "Harshang" design, which is actually a flower flanked by sprays. The outer border is a classic Caucasian finishing border known as 'running dog'. In excellent condition, signs of wear consistent with age. Flatwoven, with a solid handle.
