Sweet Fern. Comtonia peregrina. This attractive small shrub is native to the eastern US and has aromatic foliage that resembles ferns. It is often found along roadsides and is capable of fixing its own nitrogen. Once established, it can spread to form colonies, but is not invasive or hard to control. It tolerates many conditions including drought, wet sites, and wind. It prefers sandy acidic loam soil, well-drained, in full sun to part.
