It would have been worth four drachms, the smaller and more common denomination of Macedonian silver coins. It is attributed to Price 3000 in the British Museum catalogue "Coinage in the Name of Alexander the Great and Philip Arrhidaeus," meaning that it was struck during the lifetime of Alexander between approximately 333 and 327 BCE. The coin depicts Alexander as the Greek hero Herakles, with a lion skin draped over his head, as well as a seated image of the god Zeus on the reverse side.Due to his popularity as a ruler, silver coins like this continued to be issued in Alexander's name for up to two centuries after his death.
