Why This Watch Matters The Gallet “Clamshell” case was reportedly the first water-resistant chronograph case made and features four screws to hold the caseback in place. The Full Story The distinct "Clamshell" case was patented in 1936 by Schmitz Freres & Co., and was acquired by Gallet in 1937. It consists of a two-part case, with one part fitted over a specialized flared crystal and then the second component. Those two parts are clamped together and screwed down at four different points, with the screws located under each lug. This is an early example and features a “monobloc” case made out of a single piece of steel; it also features an extraordinarily beautiful two-tone dial that has aged to a beautiful golden color.
