The Luxurious Champagne Flute for Nobel Prize Ceremonies and Royalty In 1991, Gunnar Cyrén designed the Nobel flute for the 90th anniversary of the Nobel Prize. The crystal champagne glass is hand-painted with details in real 22 karat gold. The bowl, which holds 6 oz, has a long and narrow shape to preserve the bubbles in sparkling beverages. To this day, Nobel Prize-winners and royalty use the champagne glasses from the Orrefors Nobel collection every December at Stockholm City Hall. The Designer: Gunnar Cyrén Gunnar Cyrén (1931–2013) was a Swedish glass artist, silversmith, and industrial designer. He studied in the metal department at one of Sweden's most prestigious art and design universities. In 1959, Cyrén was hired at Orrefors glassworks and became head of design ten years later.
