This 184 amino acid glycoprotein plays a major role in the maturation and differentiation of B cells into plasma cells. In normal human tissues, BCMA protein and mRNA are almost exclusively found on plasma cells, and selectively overexpressed during malignant transformation of plasma cells, promoting tumor cell growth, survival, and drug resistance, mainly by activating NF κ B.
