This species exhibits sexual dimorphism, meaning males and females have distinct physical appearances. Males typically have a bright green plumage on their upper parts and a white belly, from which the species derives its common name. The throat and chest are often adorned with iridescent feathers that can appear in shades of green or blue, depending on the light. Females, on the other hand, are generally less colorful with more subdued green and grey tones. Both sexes have a straight, slender bill which is essential for feeding on nectar. An adult White-bellied Mountaingem usually measures around 10 to 12 centimeters in length, with a slight variance between males and females. Their small size is typical of hummingbirds, making them agile fliers capable of hovering in mid-air.
