One EF86 in Channel 2 consists of a high-gain pentode coupled to a six-position rotary tone switch. Outright benefits include quick dial-in of new tones and an easy return to the settings you prefer.  Also master volume works for both channels. The preamp signal passes through a 12AX7 in the phase inverter position to the output section of two EL84 power tubes.
