Carolina Allspice

Calycanthus floridus is a deciduous shrub with dark glossy leaves and sweet smelling maroon flowers, which grows comfortably in light to moderate shade. It can handle a wide variety of soil conditions but prefers moist soils. The bark can be harvested and dried to produce a cinnamon analog, while the leaves and flowers can be used to produce spicy aromas. This thicket forming shrub can grow to around 9 feet tall but handles pruning well, allowing for plenty of delicious harvests.   Hardy to USDA zone 5
