Did you know the ability to flip a light switch can’t be discussed without acknowledgement of asexuality? While Pride officially began following the Stonewall riot in 1970, it wasn’t until 2009 when the first ace group, Asexual Visibility and Education Network (AVEN), marched in San Francisco’s Pride parade. It was another year before we saw the official flag made public alongside ace awareness week. However, our asexual and aromantic peers of the LGBTQ+ community can be found throughout history with reference in essays or studies on sexual behavior. It’s even widely hypothesized that Nikola Tesla, the father of electricity, was asexual and aromantic himself. So every time you do it with the lights on, don’t forget to acknowledge our ace peers who respect your desire for consensual intimacy or sex without judgment when they want to find connection without it. Need an Asexuality 101 to better support our ace peers? Check out this Trevor Project document to help you better understand. --
