In November 1965, Joseph Desire Mobutu orchestrated a military coup and took control of Congo. By 1971, he had changed the name of the country to Zaire, intending to reflect a new identity and spirit for the nation while promoting his policy of "authenticité," which called for a return to traditional African values and culture. The name "Zaire" was derived from the Kikongo word "nzere," meaning "the river that swallows all rivers.” Despite the name change, the outside world continued to refer to the country as simply "the Congo." However, in 1974, the Zaire national soccer (football) team, known as The Leopards, had a remarkable season, winning the African Cup of Nations and earning a spot in the World Cup. The Leopards were the first team from sub-Saharan Africa to qualify for the World Cup, bringing glory not only to their players and fans but also to the name "Zaire" on the world stage. We salute the 1974 Zaire Leopards.Layover Goods   S M L XL 2XL 3XL Width, in 19.02 20.51
