Stem cells enter a process known as “differentiation” where stem cells stop dividing and gradually mature into the cells needed in the body. This image shows tissue from an animal that carries a mutation in a gene essential for differentiation. Each tiny circle is an individual stem cell that never stopped dividing and failed to differentiate.     About the Scientist Arnaldo grew up in Puerto Rico. He did his Bachelors at the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez. He then went to UT-Southwestern in Dallas, Texas to study how RNA-binding proteins influence germline stem cell differentiation guided by Michael Buszczak.
