Egg Before Chicken, Dr. Arnaldo Carreira-Rosario, 2017 About the Science How is genetic information passed from one generation to the next? To answer this question, scientists study the contribution from both male and female gametes (sperm and ovum). Interestingly, the female gamete includes not only the genetic information, but crucial parts of the cell (called organelles) such as mitochondria. This is a picture of an oocyte - which will develop into a female gamete. With the use of staining techniques and microscopy, scientists study the different cells that form an egg to learn how they develop. This is an image taken from a developing egg chamber where the small blue circles will ultimately become the eggshell, the large yellow circles are supporting cells that provide nutrients to the developing oocyte, and red sphere is the oocyte itself.
