Albert-Charles-Auguste Racinet, a brilliant artist that lived in the 1800's, took on the encyclopedic mission to "map" the decorative arts from antiquity to the eighteenth century, from cultures all over the world... like a bible of the visual arts. To do this, a number of skilled commercial artists of the day created "plates" from a great variety of mediums, including wood, metal, textiles, painting, and pottery. Although based on past masterpieces of design, th
