The paladins are the twelve legendary knights closest companions of Charlemagne, comparable to the role of the Knights of the Round Table. Orlando, also known as Roland, is Charlemagne's nephew and the chief hero among the knights. The paladins were a really popular subject of medieval romance, so popular that their stories became plays for puppet theaters and operas. The later Italian Renaissance works, Orlando in Love and The Frenzy of Orlando, once as widely read and respected as William Shakespeare's, sent the paladins on even more fantastic adventures and this further fueled new literary and poetical reworkings.
