18th c Spanish Colonial "Madonna of the Books" Polychrome Wood Statue

We are offering a Very Rare and Beautiful18th c Spanish Colonial Polychrome Statue of the Madonna of the Books. (The Virgin and the Child")Also known as the Madonna of the Book.   This wonderful hand carved Wooden Statue  depicts the Virgin and Child reading a book.  The layout and decoration suggest that it might be a Book of Hours,  one of those devotional manuals intended for laypeople  that gained widespread popularity  between the 13th and 16th centuries. The Madonna and Child Wood Carving still retain most of theiroriginal paint color, and they have their original glass eyes.Condition:  There are losses to both the paint and the Gesso,                   Some cracks in the wood from age & wear.                   (please see all photos)Dimensions:    H.  13 1/4" with crown                        H.  11 3/4" wood carving without crown                        W.  6 1/4" wide                        D.  3 5/8" deep                                                           Loc.
