West African Lungfish (Protopterus annectens) are an amazing species of fish from west and central Africa. These ancient fish have a lineage that goes back almost 100 million years and have a unique lung-like organ that enables them to breathe atmospheric air. Because of this they can survive throughout intense seasonal droughts and can aestivate (go dormant) for up to a year. African lungfish are one of the most unique freshwater fish that can be kept in aquaria. They are generally hardy and can be quite personable, once they learn to associate their keeper’s presence with being fed.  Currently available specimens are wild-caught imports.  Care Level: Intermediate  Diet: Primarily carnivorous feeding on various worms, shrimp, crustaceans, insects, snails, and small fish. They will accept prepared foods/pellet foods as well.  Adult Size: 36” pH: 6.5-8.0 Water Temp: 75-82F Other Care Preferences: A tight fitting lid is a must for any lungfish. They are capable of delivering a strong bit
