Ostrya virginiana (Ironwood)
Ostrya virginiana (Ironwood) is a native understory tree typically found on dry rocky slopes of our oak woodlands. It can be used extremely well in shade and woodland gardens for that sub-canopy naturalized texture. It can also perform well as mid-level visual screens. This tree gets its common name from the extremely hard and dense wood. Another common name, Eastern Hop Hornbeam comes from it's hop-like seed pods.
