Phlox glaberrima (Marsh Phlox)
Phlox glaberrima (Marsh Phlox) is a lovely perennial that loves savanna (part sun) and moist conditions although it can tolerate normal soils if watered. Its flowers are quite nice and is cultivated in gardens widely, hence the common name Garden Phlox. Marsh Phlox is found "wild" in many counties in Illinois, but around the Chicago area, there is debate if it is truly native here or if it was introduced from farther south. In any case, most of the "wild" populations around Chicago are escapes from gardens. Typically Phlox glaberrima can be found naturally in open woods, thickets in wet prairied, and along partially shaded river and stream corridors.
