CHIRIQUI & JAMAICA - 1955 tissue deck plan
United Fruit Company: A fold-out tissue deck plan (24" by 36") for the CHIRIQUI and JAMAICA, the final passenger carrying ships in the once large "Great White Fleet". The ships were part of a class of six mail boats launched in the early 1930s. In the early 1950s the other four ships had their passenger accommodations cut off and were converted into freighters. This swan song deck plan is dated October 1955, and shows color-coded accommodations on 3 decks. B&W photos show a large cabin, a buffet, the swimming pool, two deck scenes, and a funnel in the distinctive UFC livery. There is also a large color portrait. By this time United Fruit had given up its New York passenger service and was sailing exclusively from New Orleans. But these older ships continued to loose money and so in 1957 passenger service ceased and the CHIRIQUI and JAMAICA were converted into freighters. Very good condition.
