American Export Lines: A fold-out (30" by 32") deck plan printed on thick stock for the INDEPENDENCE and CONSTITUTION. The plan is dated November 1958 and was printed in advance of the INDEPENDENCE and CONSTITUTION going "under the knife" in early 1959. In order to increase passenger capacity on the popular ships, the Newport News Shipyard cut free their bridges and, using an incline plane, rolled these massive chunks of steel forward 21 feet and up 8 feet. New passengers cabins were built to fill the void, along with a new solarium up on Sports Deck. The changes are shown on this detailed plan which covers all three classes and eight decks. There are artists' renderings of the Solarium, Main Lounge, Marine Lounge, Boat 'n Bottle Bar, and Card Room. The cover portrait shows the modified ships still in their original black livery. The change to all white came a year later. Very good condition.
