Voyage of the New Hazard | Pictorial Map by Jack Atherton | Gold leaf Frame
Pictorial Map of the brig New Hazard by the Jack Atherton This previously unpublished pictorial map was designed by our beloved local illustrator Jack Atherton in appx 1940 and reflect the 1810 to 1813 voyage of the brig New Hazard which was built at a Newbury shipyard & registered out of Salem MA. In 1938, the Peabody Museum (now the Peabody Essex) in Salem published the ships log that was maintained by crewman Stephen Reynolds that provided a detailed account of the voyage including routes, locations, daily life on board, weather, provisions, and interactions with native peoples. The New Hazard was only 95 ft in length - yet travelled around the Horn to the Northwest Coast of America, Hawaii, and China with amazing adventures along the way. We assume that the inspiration of this stunning pictorial map stemmed from Jack's immersion in this volume and his keen interest in this historical maritime narrative. When this illustration was discovered - it was absent of color and unfinis
