1825 Carte Geographique, Statistique et Historique de L'Indiana

A desirable early map of Indiana published less than 10 years after statehood as part of Buchon’s French edition of Carey & Lea's Geographical, Statistical and Historical Atlas of America. The map depicts the density of southern populations along the Ohio and Wabash rivers, with gigantic Delaware and Wabash counties representing the frontier of American settlement at the time. Several interesting borders are shown, such as the boundary with the Kickapoos and Harrison's Purchase from the Treaty of Fort Wayne. This acquisition of territory in Indiana and Illinois was negotiated without the consent of the Shawnee, and eventually became the catalyst for Tecumseh's War. Old Indian Boundaries are depicted throughout Southern Indiana and are reflective of prior treaties that were broken or ignored. Albion, Illinois is labeled as “Birkbeck’s Prairie and Town” after the English abolitionist who settled there. Chicago is not mentioned, but Fort Dearborn is shown in addition to Fort Wayne and
