Classic/Late Classic Hubbell Blanket woven to be used as a portiere.  This Classic/Late Classic blanket was woven to be a covering for an open doorway.  Original side cords.  This exquisite weaving was extremely finely woven with Germantown yarn .   The deep red a classic trademark of the Ganado area. Steve saw a 2nd one-- the match to this one, but was unable to buy it.  So the twin is out there somewhere. Lorenzo Hubbell bought a trading post in Ganado area (1878)  of the Navajo Reservation.  This became known as The Hubbell Trading Post.  Many artists came to visit to paint the Navajo and they also painted the rugs and blankets.  These small watercolor and oil paintings are still on a wall of the National Historic site and have influenced thousands of weavings over the years.   Notice the similarities on this page from author Susan Lowell's book  Navajo Rug Designs about the Hubbell Trading Post.   Style Navajo Portiere Blanket Weaver Unknown Date 1880-1890 Size 51
