Melatonin is a hormone synthesized from the amino acid tryptophan and secreted by the pineal gland in the brain. Melatonin is secreted in a circadian rhythm and helps to regulate the body’s sleep/wake cycle. In addition to supporting natural rest, melatonin can also function as an antioxidant.
