The first time I recalled being on the Trace, we were headed to college. Not as students, yet, but as juniors in high school. Some buddies and I were headed over for a visit day from Athens, Ala to Ole Miss, and the straightest route appeared to be on the Trace. We drove west, hopped on, and immediately got caught behind a law abiding citizen doing 45mph. It felt like it took a hundred years to get off in Tupelo. Only now do I realize how special, how slow, how introspective those hours can be soaking up 10,000 years of history across three Southern states.
