Diana
August 31st, 1997. I was in Dublin for U2’s Popmart World Tour. They were playing in Lansdown Road; a stadium I could see from the living room of the little house I grew up in. I went to the first of two gigs on Friday the 30th and got back home in the early hours of the 31st. My mother was up watching the TV, crying; Princess Diana had just been killed in a car crash in Paris. Diana was a popular figure in Ireland. My mother, like most Irish women, loved her. The mood around Dublin was heavy and somber that day. U2 dedicated MLK to Diana at their second show that same night. It was a very moving moment. I was actually very surprised at how much the whole thing affected me. It inspired me to come up with my own tribute and dedicate it to my mother, so I wrote this song on the plane on the way back to the US. Originally, all the proceeds were donated to The British Deaf Association. Today, the proceeds will be donated to probably my most favorite charity, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospita
