1721 Copper Engraving Portrait Albert V Duke Bavaria Counter Reformation EUM2
This is an original 1721 black and white copper engraving of "Albertus Hertzog Baÿern." This is a portrait of Albert V, Duke of Bavaria and a Knight in the Order of the Golden Fleece, an exclusive order of chivalry. He is identified as such by the neck order, a livery collar, he is wearing in this portrait. He was the son of William IV and Marie Jacobaea of Baden. Albert V was a strict Catholic and leader of the German Counter-Reformation. He sought to establish Catholic conformity in his dominions. The portrait is framed by a wonderful decorative motif featuring a shell and botanical design at the top of the image with columns flanking the portrait. This piece is accompanied by the original German biographical text printed on a separate sheet and features a decorative drop cap,an exquisite vignette comprise of two cherubs seated within a botanical design, and a tailpiece comprised of an ornate botanical design.
