1721 Copper Engraving Portrait William V Duke Bavaria Golden Fleece Germany EUM2
This is an original 1721 black and white copper engraving of "Wilhelmus V, Herzog in Baÿern." This is a portrait of William V, Duke of Bavaria and a Knight in the Order of the Golden Fleece, an exclusive order of chivalry. He is identified as such by the neck order, a livery collar, he is wearing in this portrait. He was the son of Albert V and Anna of Austria. Known as "the Pious," William V was a strong supporter of the Counter-Reformation and devoted much of his daily routine to attending mass, praying, and devotional reading. The portrait is framed by a wonderful decorative motif featuring a shell and botanical design at the top of the image with columns flanking the portrait. This piece is accompanied by the original German biographical text printed on a separate sheet and features a decorative drop cap and an exquisite vignette that incorporates the heraldic, two-headed Quarter Eagle and the Crown of the Austrian Empire.
