This is an original 1721 black and white copper engraving of "Heinrich Hertzog von Guise." This is a portrait of Henry I, Prince of Joinville, Duke of Guise, Count of Eu. Sometimes referred to as "Le Balafré, "The Scarred," he was the son of Francis, Duke of Guise and Anna d'Este. The portrait is framed by a wonderful decorative motif featuring filigreed designs and a stylized skull with wings at the bottom of the print. This piece is accompanied by the original German biographical text printed on two separate sheets featuring a decorative drop cap, beautiful vignette comprised of an ornate geometric design, and a decorative tailpiece.
