This is an original 1722 black and white copper engraving of "Melchior Graf von Hatzfeld," also known as Melchior von Hatzfeldt, an Imperial Habsburg military commander serving under Albrecht Wenzel Eusebius von Waldstein and Matthias Gallas. In addition, he was lord of Friedland, Reichenberg, Smirschitz and Horzeniowes. The portrait is surrounded by a wonderful decorative motif featuring a bold geometric design along the borders and two oppositionally placed sphinxes framing an intriguing, stylized face.
