This article features an illustration of the colossal monument designed by Alberto de Palacio, a Spanish engineer, who has presented it as a fitting conception with which to commemorate and symbolize the discovery of the Western Continent by Christopher Columbus. The design offered a view of the colossal sphere, which is mounted on a base of 262 feet high, and is crowned at its North Pole by the caravel which carried Columbus to the New World.
