This image captures the most complete architectural remains of a Roman Palace, Diocletian's Palace in modern day Split, Croatia. Originally built at the turn of the fourth century AD, the palace was largely unknown after the Middle Ages in the West, but became widely recognized with the 1764 publication of Ruins of the Place of the Emporer Diocletian at Spalatro in Dalmatia by neo-classical architect Robert Adam in conjunction with artist Charles-Louis Clérisseau.
