This is an original 1908 sepia halftone print of "House of du Chayla, at Pont de Montvert." This image capture the home of Father du Chayla, the leader of 75 missionaries sent to Cévennes to convert Protestants. In mid-July of 1702, du Chayla had7 young people arrested, locking four men and their guide in his own home. On the evening of July 22, 1702, the parents of the prisoners leaded with the Father to no avail. In response, Abraham Mazel gathered about sixty men in arms. They returned to Father du Chayla's home, demanding the release of the prisoners. When du Chayla again refused, the men set fire to the staircase of his home. The prisoners and du Chayla were forced to jump from the second floor windows. Father du Chayla broke his leg, was captured, and put to death on the village bridge. This incident is considered the impetus for the war of the Camisards.CONDITIONThis 103+ year old Item is rated Near Mint / Very Fine+. No creases. No natural defects. No surface rub.No tear
