1908 Halftone Print La Cavalerie Camisard War French Protestant Cavlary XGLA3

This is an original 1908 sepia halftone print of "La Cavalerie, Within the Camisard Wall." The Camisards were French Protestants (Huguenots) of the isolated Cévennes region of south-central France. The group faced persecution following the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, raising an insurrection in 1702 known as the war of the Camisards. One even in particular triggered the war: In mid-July of 1702, Father du Chayla, the leader of 75 missionaries sent to Cévennes to convert Protestants, had 7 young people arrested, locking four men and their guide in his own home. On the evening of July 22, 1702, the parents of the prisoners leaded with the Father to no avail. In response, Abraham Mazel gathered about sixty men in arms. They returned to Father du Chayla's home, demanding the release of the prisoners. When du Chayla again refused, the men set fire to the staircase of his home.
