One of the largest Hubble Space Telescope images ever made of a complete galaxy. The Hubble telescope captured a beautiful display of starlight, glowing gas, and silhouetted dark clouds of interstellar dust in this image of the barred spiral galaxy NGC 1300. Barred spiral galaxies are named for the central bar of stars that connects the spiral arms of the galaxy. NGC 1300 is special because it also has what is known as a "grand design" disk structure in its nucleus center – a spiral within a spiral.
