Glazed Terra Cotta Urn

This charming handled terracotta urn was made in Southern France using age-old glazing techniques. Once used to hold wine or for the leavening of bread, vessels of this shape are found in almost every Mediterranean culture. I love the way this one looks filled with cheerful tulips or daffodils in spring. Note: like most pieces made in terracotta, this vessel is porous and better for use outdoors or on surfaces that are not wooden. It holds water but may leave a ring of condensation on a wooden table.
